Week Four: CCD, Team Photos, Buddies, BAC Olympics & More

June 16, 2024

Hello Shark Families,

STROKE CLINICS

Does your swimmer want to work on their stroke technique, starts or maybe their turns? The best opportunity to do this is in a Stroke Clinic led by our coaches. The clinics give swimmers an opportunity to get more personalized help on their stroke technique with a 5:1 athlete to coach ratio max. These are valuable experiences for the swimmers a proper technique is key to improving. There are available spots this week. Cost is $25/session.

VOLUNTEERS

Thank you to all who have volunteered or signed up to do so. It takes a village, truly.

2024 BUDDIES

Due to the age of our team and parent feedback, we decided to modify the buddy system from year’s past. This year we are introducing buddy groups that will be changed weekly. A buddy group is a small group of teammates who help support and cheer for each other throughout the week at both swim meets and practice. The goal is to build team camaraderie and to help new swimmers learn what it means to be a Shark! We hope weekly buddy groups will give kids the opportunity to get to know their teammates better. The new buddy groups will be announced each Sunday in the newsletter. It is not expected to purchase gifts for your group each week. If kids would like to bring items to cheer on their teammates at meets, they are welcome to do so. Coach Paul will provide the kids with more information about the buddies at practice on Monday. There will be a poster making opportunity at practice too.

GO FOR THE GOLD in 2024. For a good cause and for good old competitive fun.

Mark your calendars for our annual Corsan Challenge Fun Event on Saturday, June 29th, from 10:00am -11:30am. The fun practice theme this year will be “Go for the Gold” in honor of the Olympics! The Corsan Challenge is an annual fundraiser MICSA members participate in to support YMCA’s Detroit Swims. The YMCA’s Detroit Swims program is a grant and donor-funded program that teaches water safety skills to disadvantaged and/or underserved communities regardless of barriers. The participation fee will be $20 with the proceeds going to Detroit Swims.

BAC Olympic events will include everything from a penny toss, to BIGGEST bubble, to paper airplanes and dive and glide.

Bring swim suits and sneakers

NOTE: Jaws and Hammerheads will have practice as normal. Tigersharks and Fins will not have practice on 6/29.

COACHES’ CORNER – Coach Paul

As we roll through the season, we begin by working on and developing skills. Once those skills begin to take hold, we elevate what we do in our training. But with the increased workload comes the challenge of doing the little things right and staying focused on those skills. I found a quote I love that relates to this:

Discipline will take you to places where motivation can’t.

Motivation is something that can come and go but discipline makes the difference. Discipline is the strongest form of self-love. It’s ignoring what you want right now for something better down the road. Stay focused on the details and continue to kick butt in practice and at our meets!
