1940
MICSA FORMED

The Michigan Inter-Club Swimming Association was formed in the spring of 1940 as a result of interest in competition swimming by several Detroit area clubs.

Clarence Pinkston, Olympic platform diving champion at Antwey in 1920, was instrumental in the development of the swimming association. His wife Betty won the women’s springboard diving championship at the Paris Olympics in 1924 and the platform championship in the Amsterdam Olympics in 1928. Their success and love of swimming led to the founding of MICSA.

The first MICSA Finals event in 1940 consisted of 17 events and four relays as opposed to 58 events and six relays in 2017. The trophy given out to the winning coach at the League Championship meet is still called the Pinkston Trophy in honor of MICSA founder Clarence Pinkston.

1960
BAC ESTABLISHED

The Birmingham Athletic Club was established in 1955 by a group of local residents interested in developing a family club centered around athletics and social events for the membership. During the late 1950's, squash facilities existed in Detroit, but none near the Birmingham-Bloomfield area where Fred Matthaei and other founding BAC members resided.

In 1956, Mr. Matthaei purchased property on Maple Road and spearheaded the effort to recruit friends and families in the Birmingham-Bloomfield area to help develop his concept of what the Birmingham Athletic Club should be. The clubhouse was originally built in 1960, along with a cabana, 6-lane pool with diving well and two tennis and squash courts.

1967
BAC JOINS MICSA

The Birmingham Athletic Club officially joins MICSA in 1967, expanding the association to its current size of 14 teams. After expanding to 14 teams, MICSA creates two divisions of 7 teams. The members of each division changes year-to-year based upon points scored by each team during the previous year's MICSA finals.
